“Jian Xian” Solo Exhibition - in Hong Kong

12 October 2015

HONG KONG, September 16, 2015 – Contemporary Chinese ink artist Wang TingXin will have her first solo exhibition entitled “Jian Xian” in Hong Kong from October 8 to 9 this year, bringing together representative works from the artist's various thematic pieces.

Artist Wang TingXin favours black Xuan paper as her painting medium. Her works combine the ideology of traditional Chinese brush work with the abstraction of impressionism style to create her own unique style of painting. Through her works, Wang shows the beauty of Chinese ink and colour within a contemporary cultural context.

Painting has always been Wang’s passion since she was little, as colours and forms have always been giving her tremendous pleasure. She is particularly fond of Chinese ink and colour. “The world was dark at its inception. Painting on black Xuan paper opens a realm of imagination and gives me a sense of the process of creation. I like using the colour gold and in my eyes, it is the best depiction of light,” says Wang.

Apart from being fascinated by light and shade, Wang is also intrigued by the ever-changing beauty of water. Since childhood, Wang has been living near to water, from so close by the seashore, the lake, the waterfall, the river and back to the seashore. When the feelings of joy, happiness, sadness or despair came upon her, she ran to the waterfront and shared laughter or tears with the sky and the sea. Her soul just attempts to echo Nature.

The unique charm of Wang’s works has already been getting the attention and praises from art critics internationally. According to Carolina Lio, a renowned international art curator, Wang TingXin’s works are the self-portraits of the painter that speak of herself more authentic and personal, of her thoughts and her personality. “There is a great propensity to spirituality and subtle form of anxiety, with inner tension leading but always resolved with great positivity. All these elements are from TingXin, within her spirit, and are reflecting on her paintings, so personal and instinctive. TingXin puts them in the form of art, very delicate and balanced, but still strong and intense,” Lio comments.

Courtyard of the Soul - In UK LONDON

 8 Mar - 16 Apr 2017

Halcyon Gallery is pleased to announce the unique exhibition of Wang Tingxin, a Hong Kong based artist who combines the ideology of traditional Chinese brush work with the serial abstraction of the French Impressionists in her individual style of painting. Opening to the public on 9 March, Courtyard of the Soul is Tingxin’s first exhibition outside of Hong Kong and will feature 32 works in ink on paper depicting her deeply personal meditations on landscape.

In Chinese culture, water lilies are symbols of purity, goodness and elegance, despite their roots in shallow and often murky waters. This strength, beauty and flourishing spirit moved Tingxin to paint for the very first time. The eponymous exhibition – Tingxin meaning ‘Courtyard of the Soul’ in the Chinese language – can be seen as an ode to her beloved water lilies through an exploration of light and colour.

Reminiscent of the late works of Claude Monet in subject matter, Tingxin’s practice is also deeply rooted within the Chinese traditions of her origins. Each piece is produced on Xuan paper - an ancient variety of paper originating from Xuanzhou city in the Anhui province, where raw materials go through more than 140 processes in order to create its fine, smooth and tenacious texture. The dark, enigmatic surface serves as a canvas for abstract bursts of colour, illuminated by dense gold. Coloured ink is then carefully applied, blended and reconciled with water to create a unique effect of an ever-changing interplay of light and colour.

Water & Bronze Exhibition-UK LONDON

21 Aug 2017 - 10 Sep 2017

The Water & Bronze Exhibition at Halcyon Gallery showcases the captivating work of artist Wang TingXin, particularly her stunning series on Water Lilies. Wang TingXin's choice of black Xuan paper as her painting medium adds a unique depth to her pieces. She skillfully blends traditional Chinese brushwork with the abstract elements of impressionism, resulting in a distinctive and contemporary style of painting.

Through her art, Wang TingXin beautifully captures the essence of Chinese ink and color within a modern cultural context. Her interpretation of the water lily, a subject rich in symbolism from both Eastern and Western traditions, is a testament to her creativity and originality. Wang's ability to infuse a classic theme with a fresh and contemporary perspective is truly remarkable.

In her paintings, Wang TingXin's positive attitude shines through the dense layers of light she meticulously creates. Her precise and vibrant brushstrokes bring life and rhythm to the canvas, breaking through the darkness of the black surface. The way she manipulates light and shadow in her work evokes a sense of movement, as if the water lilies are stirring and the stagnant water is coming to life, almost resembling a sky in its depth and complexity.
